Society of Illustrators Annual 57

I'm pleased to announce that my illustration for "The Tallest Doll in New York City" was accepted into the Society of Illustrators 57th annual exhibit and book. Many thanks to Art Director Irene Gallo at Tor.com for giving me the opportunity to illustrate such an original short story about skyscraper romance on Valentine's day.

Circus Elephants

A Dr. Know illustration about the cruel treatment of circus elephants, specifically during the 1800s by the John Robinson Circus.

Kitty at the Bat

An illustration for the Dr. Know column about one of the Cincinnati Reds' first night games. The crowd overflowed onto the field. A woman named Kitty Burke emerged from the heckling crowd and took a turn at bat. 

Republic Street

An illustration for the Dr. Know column in Cincinnati Magazine about how a street sign came to be misspelled. A gentleman from The Streets Department didn't know how it happened, so this was my interpretation. 

Let's Celebrate the Art of Clutter

For the New York Times Style Section. An article that bucks the trend of shedding our collective stuff and embraces accumulation. The author feels that it's part of being human to collect things we cherish. Thanks to Art Director Rodrigo Honeywell. 

I've included some sketches and inked linework to show some of the process. The article was the most emailed on the NYTimes website on Sunday, which was very gratifying to be a part of.

Taft Museum of Art

For Cincinnati Magazine's Dr. Know column about how the Taft Art Museum got so crowded in by its neighbors. I interpreted Rembrandt's Portrait of a Man Rising from His Chair from the Taft Museum's collection.

Water Bill

A question about an ever-increasing water bill. For the Dr. Know column in Cincinnati magazine. Concept sketches included.

Batman Black and White

I was honored to have Chip Kidd ask me to to draw Batman for him. I used to draw the caped crusader a lot as a young comic fan and it was fun to do it again after all these years. 

The sketch on the back is a nod to the Detective Comics in which Batman first appeared. It's a combination of his first appearance on the cover of Detective Comics 27 and the villain on issue 31.

Chip's work has inspired me since I can remember. I was excited to draw something for him after the many years I've spent awed by his creativity and originality.
